Das landscape.studio stellt Fragen an den Raum zwischen den ausgestellten Objekten, der architektonisch-szenografischen Struktur, der Rauminstallation und der Architektur des Kunstgewerbemuseums.

Wir nehmen das Museum als ein verlandschaftetes Gefüge von Zeiten, Orten, Dingen, Architekturen und Institutionen wahr. Unsere künstlerische Auseinandersetzung geht vom Dazwischen, von unserem Wahrnehmen der Atmosphäre, dem Staunen, dem Unerwarteten, dem Spuk, aus. Unser Erleben, sich in der linearen Zeit von Vergangenheit, Gegenwart und Zukunft zu befinden, gerät durch diese Perspektive durcheinander.

Hier meldet sich etwas Unaussprechliches, Gespenstisches und stellt Forderungen an uns. Nach Erinnerung, Gerechtigkeit, nach anderen Möglichkeiten, wie wir zusammen leben wollen, und nach Handeln.

Landschaft wird für uns zu einem beweglichen Zusammenhang: Sie verändert sich historisch, politisch, technisch, klimatisch und symbolisch. Statt „schöne Kulisse“ ist sie ein umkämpftes Gefüge von Macht, Sinn und materiellen Bedingungen – ein Raum, in dem Kriege, ökologische Krisen, soziale Ungleichheit und politische Kämpfe aufeinanderprallen und verhandelt werden müssen.

Dieses Dazwischen, der Spuk, erfährt damit eine eigene Lesart und wird zum Erfahrungsraum über das persönliche Wahrnehmen der Leerstellen als Möglichkeitsräume in einer verletzlichen, sich schnell verändernden und bedrohten Gegenwart. Unsere Bildwelten aus unseren verschiedenen Herkunftsländern, Ukraine, Afghanistan, Schweiz und Kosovo, entstehen über unsere individuellen malerischen Herangehensweisen.

Die Suche nach dem Dazwischen, dem Gespenstischen soll die feinen Risse in dem Aufspüren, was als geordnete Wirklichkeit erscheint. Wir nehmen wahr, wo der Spuk sich meldet weil etwas fehlt: Ausgelöschte Erzählungen, nicht gegangene Wege, unvollendete Utopien und ferne Erinnerungen.

Wir arbeiten offen, experimentell, sinnlich und lustvoll direkt in der Installation im Kontakt mit den Besuchenden. Abstraktion, Farbe, Textur, Format und Material sind unsere Gestaltungsmittel. Bilder von Landschaften entstehen auf verschieden grossen Farbtafeln aus Abfallholz. Auf den Boden gelegt, an die Wand gelehnt und in den Raum gestellt, werden sie zu einem Sehfeld.

In Zeiten der Kriege dürfen wir das Menschsein und unsere Phantasie nicht verlieren. Christiane Hamacher

haunting as a social imagination

landscape.studio explores the space between the exhibited objects, the architectural and scenographic structure, the spatial installation and the architecture of the Museum of Decorative Arts.

We perceive the museum as a landscaped fabric of times, places, things, architectures and institutions. Our artistic exploration stems from the in-between, from our perception of the atmosphere, the sense of wonder, the unexpected, the haunting. Our experience of being situated within the linear flow of past, present and future is thrown into disarray by this perspective.

Here, something inexpressible and ghostly makes itself felt and makes demands of us. For remembrance, justice, for other ways in which we wish to live together, and for action.

Landscape becomes for us a fluid context: it changes historically, politically, technically, climatically and symbolically. Rather than a ‘beautiful backdrop’, it is a contested fabric of power, meaning and material conditions – a space in which wars, ecological crises, social inequality and political struggles collide and must be negotiated.

This in-between space, this haunting presence, thus acquires its own interpretation and becomes a space of experience through the personal perception of voids as spaces of possibility within a vulnerable, rapidly changing and threatened present. The visual worlds we create, drawing on our diverse backgrounds in Ukraine, Afghanistan, Switzerland and Kosovo, take shape through our individual painterly approaches.

The search for the in-between, the spectral, aims to reveal the subtle cracks in what appears to be an ordered reality. We perceive where the haunting manifests itself because something is missing: erased narratives, paths not taken, unfinished utopias and distant memories.

We work openly, experimentally, sensually and with enthusiasm directly within the installation, in contact with the visitors. Abstraction, colour, texture, format and material are our creative tools. Images of landscapes emerge on colour panels of varying sizes made from waste wood. Placed on the floor, leaned against the wall and positioned within the space, they become a field of vision.

In times of war, we must not lose our humanity or our imagination. Christiane Hamacher
